Ibadan — SOME hitches that greeted the take-off of the national home grown school feeding programme continued unabated yesterday in Oyo State as the school vendors alleged that the government used political consideration in choosing cooks for the programme.

But, the Commissioner for Education in the state, Prof. Adeniyi Olowofela described the allegation as ‘’mere exaggeration” noting that during recruitment exercise, both the existing vendors in schools and new ones were engaged.

Vanguard monitored some schools in Ibadan North West and Ido Local Government Areas and there were several militating factors against the exercise.
The schools monitored included; Ebenezer Anglican Church Primary School, Ekotedo, Saviour African Church Primary School in Ibadan North West. Also, Hope Central Primary School, Omi, Omi Adio, Saint Andrews School, Omi Adio, Islamic Primary School, IDC Primary School, Tola. Baptist Primary School, Ateere and IDC Primary School, Araromi Iyana Ideere all in Ido local government area of the state. Only 47 out of 76 schools in Ido local government are enjoying the programme.
A vendor, Alimot Abubakar said: “We are highly disappointed at the attitude of the organisers of the programme. We got the forms, but when the list was released, no food vendor in Ibadan North West was considered. Instead, they enlisted only politicians loyal to them. It was very painful.”
Another vendor also complained that she had not been paid any money since the programme started.
The allegations were however dismissed as tissues of lies by the Education commissioner.
Olowofela said, “No vendor can say they spent their personal money. It is true there are issues but we believe within the next few days, we will achieve 100 percent success.
The commissioner who said the programme has multiplier effect, noted that it served as empowerment for some people and would boost agricultural produce.
On allegation of employing politicians as food vendors, he said, “it is an exaggeration. We harmonised the lists. We use some existing vendors and hired new ones. They are all residents of Oyo. Some of the hired vendors have issues with their BVN.”
