When Ukegbu returned home to spend Easter with his family, he was fatally shot in his village at Umuoshike Ogbor in the state’s Aboh Mbaise Local Government Area, numerous police sources revealed to The PUNCH correspondent.

When the inspector arrived from his base in Owerri, one of the sources told our correspondent that he had been abducted from his home. The inspector was later discovered dead in a bush along Mbutu in the Aboh Mbaise LGA, according to the source, who asked not to be named because he lacks the official clearance to speak on the subject.

According to the source, Inspector Augustine Ukegbu, who was working at the Orji police divisional headquarters, returned home to Aboh Mbaise to celebrate Easter with his family. He was taken from his home in the village on April 8 at around 11 p.m. by gunmen driving a Lexus jeep.

The Oke Ovoro police division received a complaint of the kidnapping. Later, the abandoned jeep used to kidnap him was discovered at Aboh Mbaise along the Mbutu Road. Police officers arrived at the location, investigated the nearby bush, and discovered the inspector’s body.

The inspector’s body had been placed in a nearby mortuary by some police officers, according to the source, and his captors’ Lexus jeep had been found by the inspector’s coworkers.

A second person, who was incensed by the murder of the police officer, claimed to have seen the murdered inspector in Owerri on the day he was heading to the hamlet.

In Owerri, Inspector Augustine told him he was going to Mbaise to spend Easter with his family, the man said. We say hello to each other, and I wish him safe travels. He was employed by the Orji police divisional and had previously worked at the Owerri headquarters. He worked for the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Division. His passing saddens me.

Henry Okoye, the state police’s spokesman, announced that the command has started an inquiry into the kidnapping and murder of the Inspector.
