An Islamic cleric, Ahmed Atidade, has been arrested by the Nigerian Police Command in Oyo State over allegations of threatening to kill a police officer. The incident, which occurred on February 4, 2023, involved the cleric assaulting and threatening to kill the officer who had stopped his vehicle for routine checks and questioning along the Ibadan Express Road.

The 28-year-old cleric was subsequently arrested and charged to court, according to the Force Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi. He emphasized that the police would not tolerate any attempt to undermine or ridicule its officers and the policing system in Nigeria.

Adejobi stressed that it was the responsibility of citizens to respect law enforcement agents, who work tirelessly to ensure the security of the nation. He added that the police would take all necessary measures to defend its officers who carry out their duties diligently and legally from being harassed or attacked by any individual or group of persons.

In a viral video of the incident, the cleric, dressed in an agbada with his turban, could be heard threatening the cops by the roadside, boasting of his father’s influence in the state and claiming to have powerful connections. He also threatened to kill the officer who stopped his vehicle, adding that he would show them that he was bigger than them.
