The Ekiti State Police Command has detained Jimoh Gani, a leader of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), for his alleged involvement in the gangrape of a female student at the Bamidele Olumilua University of Education, Ikere-Ekiti.

In a statement released on Thursday, April 13, 2023, the command’s spokesperson, Sunday Abutu, confirmed the arrest and identified the culprit as the former secretary of the NURTW, Ado/Oye, and Ikole-Ekiti axis.

According to Abutu, the victim (name withheld) had taken a bus from Ado-Ekiti to Oye-Ekiti on the fatal day.

The culprit reportedly altered their destination from Oye-Ekiti to Ansar-Udeen Secondary School, where he and two other fugitive accomplices gang raped the victim.

In addition, her phone, worth $65,000, and $16,000 in cash were stolen.

The defendant admitted during questioning that he and his accomplices, Ado-Ekiti residents Femi Ayobami and Alfa Kayode, were responsible for the horrible crime. The pair is alleged to have fled the scene of the crime while being arrested.

According to the PPRO, various illicit charms utilized for their nefarious activities were found after the PPRO raided their criminal hideouts.

He expressed his gratitude to the general public, and in particular kind-hearted people, for their assistance in contributing timely and helpful information that helped achieve some of the results.

Abutu urged all state citizens and residents to practice security awareness, to be on the lookout for suspicious activity, and to immediately report any such occurrences to the nearest police station.
