On April 15, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) conducted supplementary governorship, national and state Assembly elections in Kebbi and Adamawa states, as well as national and state assemblies’ elections in 24 states of Nigeria. The governorship supplementary election was held in 142 polling units across 20 local government areas of Kebbi State while in Adamawa State, the supplementary elections were held in 20 local government areas to determine the next governor between Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of the Peoples Democratic Party and Senator Aishatu Binani of the All Progressive Congress.

However, the elections in Kebbi State have been marred by allegations of vote-buying. Two female voters claimed that they were given N3,000, two wrappers, and packs of pasta by the “broom” party after casting their votes. The alleged vote-buying occurred at the Baban Dutsi Model Primary School, which has three polling units: Karyo, Umijin Nana and Baban Dutsi.

This is not the first time that vote-buying has been reported in Nigerian elections. In fact, it has become a common practice during elections in the country. Vote-buying is a form of electoral malpractice where politicians give money or gifts to voters in exchange for their votes. It undermines the integrity of the electoral process and weakens democracy.

Vote-buying is usually carried out by politicians who want to win at all costs, even if it means compromising the integrity of the electoral process. It is a tactic used by politicians to manipulate the will of the people and sway election results in their favor. It is a form of corruption that is not only illegal but also unethical.

INEC has repeatedly warned against vote-buying and other forms of electoral malpractice. However, these warnings have not been enough to deter politicians from engaging in these acts. To ensure free, fair and credible elections, there is a need for more stringent measures to be put in place to curb vote-buying and other forms of electoral malpractice.

In conclusion, the allegations of vote-buying in the supplementary elections held in Kebbi State are a cause for concern. Vote-buying is a serious form of electoral malpractice that undermines the integrity of the electoral process and weakens democracy. It is important for all stakeholders to work together to curb this practice and ensure free, fair, and credible elections in Nigeria.

Legislative polls will also be conducted in the state.
